Tips – Preparing your home and family for a bushfire

With bushfire season about to arrive, if you haven’t yet, it’s important to prepare your home and your family for the possibility of fire. Even if you plan to leave before a fire, there’s a greater chance of preserving your home if you’ve prepared properly.

By doing a few things throughout the year, you can help keep you, your family, and your home safe.

Here are six ways to prepare.

  • Stay informed and make a habit of checking your local fire danger ratings.
  • Clean gutters of leaves and twigs, including downpipes.
  • Regularly mow your lawn and trim any tress/shrubs that are close to your home.
  • Remove excess combustible material from around the house such as piles of leaves or wood.
  • Check that your survival kit is ready and accessible and you have a bush fire plan in place.
  • Check your home and contents policy is up to date.

Preparing for fire doesn’t have to be hard or take up too much time.  Making decisions with your family and planning what you’ll do in the event of a bushfire will help make sure everyone knows what to do if the worst occurs.
